Caring for destination

This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

JollyBoys supports a local orphanage called Lubasi Children's Home and the Maramba Old People's Home. The owners also work hand in hand with local tour companies.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

JollyBoys support a local orphanage with donations of goods from guests, plus donations generated through a book exchange programme at the hostel. It organises an annual Christmas lunch at the orphanage for both orphans and JollyBoys' guests.

JollyBoys' staff are sponsored for further education and most courses are fully subsidised. JollyBoys works hand in hand with a local tour company, Floating Skies, to mentor and develop their tourism and business skills for expeditions to Kafue National Park and the Western province.

JollyBoys Backpackers is leading the way for Green Tourism to become mainstream in Zambia. The lodge has been working closely with a member of PUM (a Dutch NGO) to develop greener building practices for the expected expansion. By taking advantage of the expert skillls of PUM and their associates, the lodge has access to current developing methods of cooling and construction.
