Livingstone Accommodation Stanley Safari Lodge Sustainability

Reinout De Gruijter Director

Reinout, a former banker, and his wife, Vinciane, an architect, started building this lodge from scratch in 2001. They left their respective home countries, the Netherlands and Belgium, to devote their energies to this new challenge in the African bush. The 110-acre property has been obtained from His Royal Highness Chief Mukuni, monarch of the Victoria Falls. Almost all the construction workers came from the nearby Mukuni village and till today, Stanley Safari Lodge is the biggest employer of the people of Mukuni village.

Caring for destination

This accommodation provider has taken action to address one or more issues (whether environmental, social or cultural) which will contribute positively to the long term viability of the destination and hence their site displays a Caring for the destination rating.

Main area of focus in Caring for the Destination:

Stanley Safari Lodge's main area of focus is environment protection by minimising consumption of water and electricity.

Detailed description of the Caring for the Destination Initiative:

Stanley Safari Lodge tries to minimise its environmental footprint through a variety of measures and initiatives.

The electricity in Zambia is hydro powered, resulting in zero carbon dioxide emissions. However, the lodge has also undertaken various power saving measures with energy saving lights throughout the property. They are also replacing the electric geysers with solar-powered alternatives.

The lodge also follows some minimal impact water saving measures. All the clean drinking water is obtained from a local borehole. All grey water is collected centrally and cleaned via a system of aerobic and anaerobic chambers and ponds with various plants and fish. At the bottom of these ponds, water is continually pumped to the top and refiltered; the water is then used to water the lawns and gardens.
