Elephant_Back_Safari
Located near Thorntree Lodge, approximately 10 km from Livingstone, is Zambia's first ‘elephant camp'.
Together with an ecologically-friendly method of game viewing, a strong emphasis is placed on an elephant experience rather than just an elephant ride and guests are encouraged to interact with these majestic and intelligent African mammals. The training techniques used by Zambezi Elephant Trails are based on the positive reinforcement method as opposed to the controversial "discipline and submission" technique, commonly associated with Asian elephants.
Each of the six African elephants, Madinda, Bop, Marula, Liwa, Danny and Mashumbi offer two guests an unparalleled viewpoint of the mighty Zambezi River and surrounding bush area of Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park. They also have the proud edition of two calves, both born at the elephant camp. Chavaruka was born to Mashumbi on November 7 2004 and Nandi was born to Liwa and Bop on the April 13 2007. Both calves accompany their mothers on the walk with guests, frolicking along with the herd.
The tour itinerary is as follows:
- clients are picked up from their accommodation
- clients arrive at elephant camp, where they are given a briefing and refreshments
- elephant back safari begins
- return from safari for elephant interaction (includes stroking and feeding the elephants)
- video show of the safari
- clients transferred back to their accommodation.
